- Anchorage

Many airlines
fly to Anchorage. Note: Almost all commercial airlines require
that guns be put in hard locked gun cases, however please DO NOT bring
your hard case to the Holitna Lodge.
They must be left in Aniak or Red Devil, or possibly at your
hotel in Anchorage if the flight from Anchorage doesn't require
them. Check w/ the airline prior to make sure. Only in bush planes
can soft cases be used. Best bet is to transport your guns in a soft
case encased in a locked hard case. Use the hard case for the
commercial flights and soft case in the bush and while hunting. We list a couple of online services
to help you in booking your flights on our
Favorite
Sites page. You may also contact Navigant International Alaska at
800-779-3705. They are very familiar with Alaskan-Adventures and understands the nuances involved. Click here for other
Alaskan Travel Agencies. Make sure you arrive in
Anchorage several hours early or better yet, the day before your flight
out to the Holitna lodge. Rocky and Sharon will be glad to assist you in
putting together a plan that works for you. You
will need to purchase all
licenses and permits
online or in
Anchorage PRIOR
to arrival as they are not available at the Holitna Lodge. Fishing and Hunting
Licenses and Tags can be obtained
online prior to
even traveling to Alaska. Click on the
Alaska
Department of Fish and Game
link to apply. Use your back button to
return to this site.
If arriving the day before and laying over in
Anchorage we suggest the
Puffin Inn of Anchorage.
(1-800-478-3346)
Mention this code:
AKAD11 and tell them you are with
Alaskan-Adventures
and hopefully you will get a better rate. Please save your
confirmation number and give this to us. They provide
24 hour airport shuttle service and fish & meat storage.
Arriving a day before will give you ample time to relax, get last minute
gear, get
your animal tags (if applicable), and enjoy an evening in the largest city in Alaska.
Laying over at the Puffin Inn at least one night is also
suggested for those returning from their
fun filled week. The Puffin Inn
will hard freeze your fish and meat so that it will stay frozen for your
trip home.
- Anchorage to Aniak to
Holitna
You will need to purchase and book not only your
flight to Anchorage but maybe from Anchorage to Aniak, Alaska as well. Important: Contact Alaskan Adventures
prior to making any reservations out of Anchorage to Aniak. They
are working on some other options that could save you time and
money. At present there are two airlines offering flights, Penn Air and
Frontier Airlines. Both charge $400 or more R/T from Anchorage, however we
have worked out a deal w/ Penn Air and you might be able to get
this fare for less if you make sure to tell them you
are going to Alaskan-Adventures on the Holitna. Aniak is an interesting native village on the Kuskokwim
River. This flight originates from the Anchorage International Airport and
transfer is not difficult, however remember that all animal tags,
fishing/hunting
licenses, special gear etc. must be done prior to going to Aniak. Please go
online
and get your
licenses and tags at least a month prior to your trip. These items can
be purchased in Anchorage and
occasionally they can be obtained in Aniak but reliability in Aniak is
sometimes an issue, and if you do not have them
you are stuck, because
we do not sell them at the lodge. For those on the
standard week at the Holitna it may be better to book to Aniak the day
before and layover one night but again, check with Alaskan Adventures prior
in case that have other options for you. Bed and
breakfast is approximately $95.00. From Aniak you will fly out to the Holitna Lodge to begin your week of fun!
You will be
given specific flight times and information for this bush plane flight
from Aniak to the Holitna Lodge. This will cost you about $395.00 or more R/T unless you are on a guided trip or special
package approved prior by Rocky. This must be paid prior to Alaskan-Adventures so we
can guarantee your flight. You will be able to enjoy incredible
fishing and/or hunting for five full days. At the end of your week you will be flown back to Aniak. Schedule your return flight
from Aniak back to Anchorage on an afternoon flight. Layover in
Anchorage at the lodging of your choice and have your meat/fish hard frozen, shop, make any taxidermy arrangements, relax, and then fly out
of Anchorage for the flight home on the next day. Stay longer if you
want to do some sightseeing in Alaska.
Please understand that there are several ways to get
to the Holitna lodge. Occasionally charter
flights are booked straight through from Anchorage but these are
usually expensive and hard to set up. Another option is to route through
Sleetmute or Red Devil and then go by boat the rest of the way. This can be
especially helpful for large loads. Do not book
any of these alternate trips without checking with Rocky first,
so that proper arrangements can be made, but normally these options
will not be available because each weeks groups have to be booked on
the same routes. Check your hunting/fishing package
carefully. It is usually more convenient and often less expensive to
get an upgraded package that includes the travel expenses R/T from Aniak
to the Holitna. The really positive aspect of being so remote and
traveling various routes to get to the Holitna is that you will really
get the chance to see the real Alaska!! Cookie cutter outfits located
in Anchorage and Kenai do not afford you this opportunity and rarely
offer the kind of wildlife experiences you will get by going with
Alaskan-Adventures.
The
return trip usually arrives at Anchorage International Airports late afternoon. If
you do not plan to layover please remember not to book a flight out of Anchorage before
7:00 PM.
Important!! All gear, including rifle,
ammo, and case,
should not weigh more than 40 lbs. per person. All flying is done
in small aircraft and space and weight are at a premium. Excess
baggage is on a "Space Available" basis with an extra charge of $1.00
per lb. in and out of the Holitna. Clothing should be packed
in soft sided, duffel, canvas style bags. All guns must be transported
in individual hard locked gun cases. Commercial airlines will not allow
weapons carried in soft cases and will normally not allow ammunition and
guns stored together. Bush planes and pilots do allow soft cases for
guns, but since you will have the hard cases anyway you will probably
wind up bringing them as far as Anchorage or Aniak. If at all possible
store them at your hotel in Anchorage or at the Airport in Aniak. Try to
avoid bringing them to the Alaskan-Adventures Lodge. They are bulky and
create extra weight. Check w/ the airline taking you to Aniak and if
they allow soft cases then store the hard cases at your place of lodging
in Anchorage, and pick them up on your return trip. Most will store
items on a short term basis for you. If you wind up taking them to
Aniak, they will allow you to store them at lockers at the airport. Contact the airlines for
specific information, especially since security is much more strict
since September 11, 2001.
All Alaskan flying is dependent on the weather.
If your connection cannot make our Lodge (very rare), you will be given
the next available flight.
