As a grizzled, older Alaskan Guide and Outdoorsman, I am processing some new realizations. Spending my life in Wild Alaska gives me some thinking time! I now know that there are two Bibles. Both are inspired by the same God. One is this orb that we call earth. It is an open book to all peoples of this planet. The earth and universe shout out, sing out the presence of God. He says, “I am the planner, I am the designer, the architect, and with love I am entrusting to you this marvelous gift, the UNIVERSE! Just as you cherish your own body, care for this world around you. Both will require your time and faithfulness, and both are worth it.” Yes, both our physical body and earthly planet share the same promise of restoration.
There are those who think nothing of taking the life of an unborn, yet are the leaders in environmentalism. Does that make sense? Then the reverse is also true. Darwin said as he neared death, he has lost his joy in the Arts, and was dull to all nature. Why? I think his greatest loss was his capacity (his soul) to thank and worship his Creator!
Have you ever thrown a rock and killed a little bird? Have you shot a nuisance possum, porcupine, or squirrel because they wandered into range? I have…while thinking it was making me manly, at some level within, I felt shame. Here’s why. The Lord says he is loving to all things he has made. He satisfies the desires of all living things. Aarrrrgh!!! Even mosquitoes… and it’s my blood they crave!
The trespasser or poacher that abuses property and violates the owner’s wishes is despiteful and thoughtless. Is that the way we want our environment treated? Our own bodies (a wonderful complex universe within itself) and this planet that our bodies dwell in, make us the land holders, the caretakers, the property management team of this gifted realm. We are to care for this planet as a mother cares for her newborn child. The Lord took man and put him in the Garden of Eden to tend and keep it! My friend, that mandate has not changed.
How revealing and exciting does that make Christmas to us? Nativities, Angels, Shepherds, Wise men, and mangers reflect physical attributes of a God and Savior who is seeking and searching for YOU! It reveals a God in Creation, in countless and marvelous ways. God continues to reveal himself in the natural world. He reveals his life and love for you from the cradle to the Cross.
As you hunt or fish, walk in the park, enjoy the rain, marvel at the autumn leaves, or simply absorb the nature channels on TV, again become the excited child with the capacity for Joy by saying, “I love you, Daddy! Thanks for this gift of Creation!” Remember to thank him and enjoy His Christmas gifts all season long!
